New Facility

Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge – Alexandria faced a unique set of opportunities and challenges as they looked to expand their ministry on a scenic lakeside property. The site demanded careful consideration—balancing shoreline setbacks, preserving lake views, and maintaining the charm of the existing residential neighborhood. Just as important was the design challenge: how to create a large-scale facility that still felt like home to its residents.
Station 19 Architects responded with a thoughtful, residentially inspired solution. The building was strategically sited to make the most of the lake views from communal spaces like the dining hall and residential lounges. Each residential wing is gently angled—not only to maintain lake orientation but also to soften views from the street and nearby homes. Existing landscape buffers were preserved where possible and enhanced with new plantings to protect neighborhood character. Residential-scale materials and hipped rooflines help the structure blend naturally into its surroundings.
Inside, the design centers on creating a sense of home. Resident rooms are arranged as suites, each anchored by a small-scale communal “living room” that buffers the private spaces from the public hallway. These areas offer a familiar and comforting rhythm—supporting both personal reflection and community connection.
By partnering with Station 19, MNTC Alexandria gained a building that feels warm, personal, and integrated into its environment. Residents now have access to restorative spaces filled with natural light and lake views—places where they can heal, reflect, and grow in community.
