Adaptive Reuse / Remodel
Size: 8,900 square foot
Completed: July 2020
Homestead Community Church came to Station 19 with the desire to convert an 1880 historic bank building in historic downtown Farmington into a new Church facility for their growing congregation. The building had been remodeled several times and was in poor condition after sitting empty for several years causing further deterioration. They wanted to respect the history of the building while creating an open, inviting, vintage feel within the design. Homestead worked with Station 19 to move the design along quickly to take advantage of volunteer labor and material donations.
Together Station 19 and Homestead created a strategic ministry plan for their new church home including a possible future expansion to the adjoining site and set a floor plan based on this potential for growth. Facing the obstacles that came with a historic building, Station 19 worked quickly to assess the repair needs that could be deferred and what needed immediate attention and remodel, thus minimizing the funds that needed to be allocated to the unexpected setbacks and instead focused them on the remaining remodel.
The result for Homestead Community Church was a building that highlighted the historic charm with a simple design and a modern vintage character. The design takes advantage of the building’s street presence with a public Lobby, Café, and circulation stairs inviting the community through the doors to worship and the people of Homestead Community Church with a warm and welcoming space.
